Training of the Pit bull
Although all dogs require individual consideration when training, pit-bull types require special considerations. Pit-bull-type dogs include the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier, and mixes of these breeds. Most of these dogs are wonderful family, but with so much public scrutiny, anhistory of poor breeding and dog-aggresive insticts, it's important that training considerations are made before adopting one.
- Dog-to-dog aggresion is a serious issue with this breed. Early socialization is important for all puppies, but it is essential for pit puppies. But even your best efforts cannot completely override a dog's genetics. Some pits will become dog-aggressive when they reach social maturity(2 to 3 years of age) regardless of early experience. A pit bull that doesnt like other dogs cannot be let loose to exercise in dog runs or other public areas. Unless fenced in, they must always be on a lead and under the control of a responsible adult. If engaged in a fight, they are capable of severly injuring or killing another dog. Some are also dangerous around cats. Choose carefully if you have other pets at home.
- Many pitbull types are extremely social dogs with humans and especially delight in children. However, due to their strenght and exuberance, in most circumstances they are generally best placed with older children.
- Pitbulls are enthusiastic learners. They enjoy trick training and many graduate at the head of their obedience classes.
- Hardy, tenacious dogs, pitbulls are moderately active dogs indoors and extremely energetic when outdoors. Be prepared to spend a minimum of 20 to 30 minute twice a day engaged in aerobic-level activities, such as Frisbee tossing, bicycle road-working or agility coursework, with your dog. Without suitable exersice, they are more likely to be destructive.
Is your pup too Aggressive?
Sometimes puppies play so hard it's difficult for owners to tell wether they really mean those growls and snarls or if there being dramatic for the game.
- Growling, lunging and barking at all dogs it sees.
- Growling, lunging and barking at all people- all people it doesn't know, or just men, women, children of a certain age.
- Snapping in the air or actually biting when someone touches it.
- Snapping or growling when someone tries to take something away.
- Lashing out, ready to fight when an adult dog midly disciplines it.
